Benzodiazepines (also known as "Benzos") and Alcohol are both Central Nervous System Depressants.

Common Benzos include:  Xanax, Ativan and Klonopin.  These are prescribed for SHORT-TERM treatment of anxiety.

They are also highly addictive and you can develop tolerance quickly (meaning you need to take more and more to avoid Benzo Withdrawal).  Common withdrawals are feeling anxious, panicky, and racing heart beat.

Neither Alcohol nor Benzos should be rapidly tapered or abruptly discontinued.  Quitting "cold turkey" can actually cause seizures!

The proper way to treat Benzo Addiction is with the "Valium Substitution Method."  This needs to be done under the care of a Physician who is well experienced in this treatment.  It is both a Science and an Art.  Yes you CAN be off of Benzos and NOT go through withdrawal if you go slow, have patience, and work closely with the Doctor.  TIME and technique are your friends here.  It generally takes one year to do CORRECTLY... meaning minimal to no withdrawal symptoms!

Alcohol Addiction is treated using the "Librium Substitution Method."  This will help prevent Alcohol Withdrawal DT's (Delirium Tremens) which are symptoms such as:  tremors, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, insomnia and even mental confusion.  For heavy drinkers, DO NOT QUIT "COLD TURKEY."  This medication will help you to quit alcohol without the physical withdrawals.

Of course, the patient should also be seeing an Addiction Counselor and/or enrolled in a 12-Step Program (or similar) to address the emotional side of alcohol addiction.

Each person is unique, but this Librium Taper is generally less than 2 weeks, and often no more than 1 week.
